Let me start off by saying what a great hockey game that was last night. The energy in Scotiabank Place was electric, and resembled a playoff game. Although the Ottawa Senators managed to give up another 2-goal lead, they still hung on to beat the best team in the NHL, the Detroit Red Wings. Not without a price, though. Dany Heatley left the game early in the 3rd with a separated shoulder after colliding with Wings' forward Dallas Drake. Disappointing considering he's played every game since becoming an Ottawa Senator a few years ago. He was also on pace for his third straight 50-goal season, a feat that hasn't been accomplished since Pavel Bure did it almost a decade ago.
I gotta give Detroit credit for making a game of it, especially after being outplayed and outworked in pretty much every area of the rink for the first 2 periods. They showed just how good they really are. It was a game full of Swedes, but none stood out as much as Sens captain Daniel Alfredsson. He opened the scoring with a hard clapper early in the 1st frame and scored the game winner with another bullet. This game was more than your average regular season game. We all love storylines...the return of former Sens netminder Dominik Hasek, all the Swedish point-getters, and of course the biggest matchup in the NHL this season. After witnessing such a good pairing last night, there is no doubt these 2 powerful teams would put on a show come June.
